The first step to better credit is obtaining your credit report.
There are many websites that will provide you with a credit report. It is important to find a credit report that contains information from all three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
Next, it's good to have a detailed and easy to read report. Many website such as myfico.com or annualcreditreport.com has eithier incomplete account data (myfico) or a confusing format (anualcreditreport).
One easy to read and detailed credit report that I like is from a website called: www.mycreditkeeper.com

Yes, I agree with you that first step is to obtained credit report. Credit report can be obtained free from three credit reporting agencies - Equifax, Experian and TransUnion once a year. After analysing credit report we can do further steps to build credit score.
